Miriam Haskell vintage 1950s gold tone Maltese Cross brooch

This Maltese Cross brooch is an absolute classic from the huge range of Miriam Haskell jewellery produced in America in the 1950s. Miriam Haskell pieces continue to be highly sought-after by collectors and increasingly valuable and difficult to source on the second-hand market.

This design was popular and made with a number of different coloured glass centres but by far the prettiest is this shimmering watery blue. Photographs cannot capture the light and movement that this brooch still shows today after reaching its seventies! The brooch is large - measuring 7.5cm across the diagonal - but it is quite a flat design and therefore not particularly heavy.

It could be worn on many types of fabric but I think these were designed especially to nestle in fur or velvet collars which were extremely fashionable in the 50s. The brooch is in excellent overall vintage condition. The pin is very very slightly bent but still completely functional and secure. The edges of the brooch show a little wear and the blue stone has a very few small marks.

I do not think any of this detracts from the beauty of the piece - in fact it speaks clearly of its authenticity and long life.
