Sphinx vintage show-stopping poured glass and rhinestone'Moghul' brooch
Sphinx jewellery was made in London from the 1940s to the 1990s. It is increasingly collectible as good pieces become harder to find and rarely come on the market. Sphinx was known best for their statement brooches, range of different styles and high quality of manufacture - so good, in fact, that Sphinx manufactured the designs for Butler and Wilson and Kenneth Jay Lane and many more, retailing through high-end department stores in London and New York.
This striking piece combines poured glass with shimmering rhinestones and faux pearls held in a beautifully-shaped gold-plated structure in the Indian or Moghul style often depicted on the turbans of Indian princes during the Raj. The colours are fabulous shades of red, a bright sapphire blue and the four beautiful turquoise crescent moons. With the pearls thrown in and gold millegrain edging this is a rich and impressive piece and it is lettered, numbered and signed'Sphinx' on the back.
The piece is in excellent condition with a straight pin and a secure catch.
