Vintage Juliana DeLizza & Elster D&E SCALLOPED BROOCH Large Red Ruffle Pin This gorgeous, scalloped brooch is covered with red and clear rhinestones which have a lovely, Aurora Borealis coating except for the large red center stone. The brooch is cast in pale goldtone metal and the clear AB stones are a lovely contrast with the reddish ones (the coating on the white stones does not show up too well in the photos but it is there). Some of the stones have less coating than others and there is one red stone along the outer edge that doesn't have much AB coating left at all but it blends in nicely with the others.
All of the rhinestones are prong set. This beautiful brooch has a tiered, scalloped design and is dimensional when viewed from the side. It resembles a flower with ruffled edges and measures about 2-1/2 inches across. The brooch is very weighty at 40.8 grams and would do best pinned to a heavier lapel.
It closes with a secure roll-over clasp. There is some fading of the goldtone metal with light surface scratches. Stones look good with light wear, I see no major wear to the stones and they are all securely prong set. The pictures of the back show puddling of solder on four of the eight stones in the center where they attach to the outer portion of the brooch. It is symmetrical and four show the puddling and four are not attached one does, the next doesn't etc..
Puddling is also seen on at least one of the smaller outer edge stones. This feature along with the exceptional quality and over the top, glitzy design of the brooch, the tiered design, the built-in pinback being directly attached and the dimensional aspect all point to this being by DeLizza & Elster. Their pieces weren't marked and came only with a hang tag. Their pieces were produced from 1947 - 1990. An exceptional piece, this dimensional brooch is sure to enhance any collection.
It's much more beautiful in person than in the pictures! Please see pictures with penny and ruler as references to size.
